A while ago I blogged about package management on Windows with Chocolatey and how it brought an apt-get or yum-like experience on Windows.

When I started using OS X a few years ago I was hoping for a similar command-line based package management experience and was a bit disappointed when I did not find one already built-in to the OS. However, I did eventually find out about Homebrew and am now glad that I can get command-line based package management on OS X / macOS.

Homebrew is really easy to get started with; navigate to the Homebrew homepage and the command to get started with Homebrew is right there at the top (at the time of this writing it is /usr/bin/ruby -e '$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)' but it is probably best to go to the Homebrew homepage to get the latest version). Copy and paste that command into a Terminal window and you should see something like this:

Getting the version of Homebrew currently installed is as simple as:

Installing a package is as simple as:

In behavior quite similar to apt-get, when requesting a package, Homebrew will attempt to automatically resolve and install the required dependencies.

To see the list of already installed packages:

Checking to see if Homebrew has a package available is as simple as:

Ensuring Homebrew itself is up-to-date is also quite easy:

Homebrew has been a very smooth, useful experience for me so far. Two thumbs up from me. ??
