Felidae Phylogenetic Tree Mac OS

Posted on  by

An easy to use and straightforward software designed from the get-go to enable users to produce high-quality figures of phylogenetic trees

Phylogenetic trees. The viewer allows the user to rapidly create high-quality, publication-ready figures of phylogenetic trees. Large trees are made easy to explore using different zoom functionalities and a small minimap of the entire tree. The viewer also comes with two alternative tree layouts, namely circular layouts and radial layouts. Macintosh Mac OS X or Mac OS executables.Java executables are also included. (Note that most of the programs in the Unix/Linux list above can also be compiled for Mac OS X using the GCC compiler that is distributed with Mac OS X).

What's new in FigTree 1.4.3:

  • New features:
  • Node shape option can now show shapes for internal or external nodes or both.
  • Copying selected taxon labels when these are selected, subtree when branches are selected.
  • Selecting 'reverse axis' should automatically reverse the Time Scale scale factor. Previously the user needed to set this to -1.0.

FigTree is a Java based OS X application designed to provide you with the set of tools needed to visualize phylogenetic trees on a Mac.

The FigTree app is able to generate graphical representations for phylogenetic trees created by the BEAST application, comes with a user friendly GUI, and enables you to make the illustrations ready for publication.

Visualize phylogenetic trees via a clean and well organized user interface that puts an accent on practicality

In ordinary terms, FigTree creates diagrams that show the similarities and differences between the genetic structure of various biological species in order to find a common ancestor.

The FigTree app enables you to visualize the phylogenetic trees in the center area of its main window, while a panel placed on the left side allows you to adjust the representation’s layout, structure, appearance, and so on.

Moreover, the top window toolbar offers you the possibility to rotate the tree, reroot a brach, make text annotations, change the color or highlight certain parts of the tree-chart, and so on.

Create, customize and manage phylogenetic charts and graphs with the help of this easy-to-use app

FigTree offers you the possibility to switch between different viewing modes when analyzing phylogenetic trees: rectangular, polar, or radial tree layout. Note that, within the Layout panel you can also customize the look of your diagram by tweaking the curvature, root length, expansion, magnification level, or apply a “Fish Eye” effect so your charts will better fit into FigTree’s main window.

Furthermore, you can export the tree diagrams in publication-ready formats, such as tree files, PDF documents, or image file formats such as JPG, PNG, or SVG. Also, for your convenience FigTree brings to the table a Search tool that enables you to find elements using specific tags such as: node age, branch length, taxon label, height, length and more.

Useful OS X app designed to aid scientists who study the evolution of biological species

All in all, FigTree offers a simple, yet competent approach for the creation and management of phylogenetic trees, thus, providing a helpful solution for researchers all over the world in fields such as bioinformatics and comparative phylogenetics.

This is the phylogenetic tree of the order Felidae. As you can see, the domestic cat is most closely related to the European wildcat (Felis sylvestris.) Both evolved from the African wildcat (Felis lybica.) [This is the most widely accepted relationship.]

Here is a more generalized form of the tree. It begins with the Domain Eukarya and ends with the Family Felidae. As the organism becomes more complex, it takes a step up this 'ladder.' The rest of the tree is located above.
